RYA Radar

International regulations state that if you have radar on board your yacht, you must know how to use it. This course will teach you how to get the best out of your radar unit.

Topics covered:-
  • General safety precautions in using equipment.
  • Basic understanding of radar wave propagation.
  • Conditions giving rise to abnormal propagation.
  • Set up procedure, functions and correct use of controls.
  • Radar set components.
  • Target definition and discrimination
  • Passive and active Radar reflectors.
  • Radar beamwidth over distance
  • Collision Avoidance
    • Plotting rules and techniques
    • Plotting Aids - Use of Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (MARPA), based on Raymarine C120.
    • AIS - Automatic Identification System (not part of the RYA syllabus, but we cover it)
  • Use of Radar as a navigation aid.
  • Accuracy and inaccuracies of radar.
We have a real Raymarine C120 navigation display unit which is used during the radar course.

We are familiar with the Raymarine (Raytheon) Pathfinder SL70 and C/E-Series of Radar and the JRC Radar 1000.

What to bring
If students have another type of Radar fitted to their yachts they are encouraged to bring along the manual.

Pre-course knowledge:
  • Good reading can be found in the RYA publication "An introduction ro Radar" ISBN 1-905104-10-3
  • Basic navigation.

  • 1 day start 09:00 finish 17:00

  • On completion of the course you will be given an RYA Radar certificate.
